Kavrous Technologies sounds like a startup name that might have you thinking, "Wow, do they like deep caverns? Is the company cavernous?" I hope that Kavrous Technologies eventually becomes a deep company—deep with knowledge, expertise, and support for the open-source community. This is a defining ethos for us moving forward.

My goal with Kavrous is to take what I did with Oak Development Technologies and expand it into something more than just a company that makes electronics boards for hobbyists. While that is something Kavrous will still do, it is only a small part of the equation. Like a lot of companies, even though we will release many of the designs we produce as open source, some designs will remain closed source. Some of this is to develop IP that we can leverage across multiple platforms, but part of it is about creating a product line that we can genuinely say is ours.

This isn't to say that these designs can't or won't become open source in the future. Established platforms should have confidence that if their products are well-made, well-produced, and well-supported, then open-sourcing the primary designs shouldn't undermine their ability to defend intellectual property or diminish the company's value because of clones. Clones will exist regardless of whether hardware and software are open or closed source. Ultimately, our goal will be to bring everything into the open.

Where Things Left Off

Oak Development Technologies left off in an interesting spot. It was 2024, and RPGA Feather, IcyBlue Feather V2, and Lattice FeatherWing were new and growing platforms we were selling. These platforms will continue into the future. It's important that the designs that made Oak successful are carried forward. There is a legacy, a foundation of trust, and an established history worth preserving. While the branding will eventually change, the boards that I have left to build for all three of these products will bear the Oak Dev Tech name.

And that legacy moves forward with Kavrous. It isn't something we are going to bury because it is and always will be an integral part of our brand identity.

Where We're Going

Kavrous is looking forward to the future. Our plan and roadmap will be laid out on the website in the coming months to give a clear view of the products we are planning to develop. As a little preview, one area we are spending considerable time on is a US-designed and manufactured drone platform for midrange and prosumer buyers. The current regulatory environment has left a considerable hole in the market, and many US-based companies in this space have abandoned it in favor of defense-sector technology. This gives us a great opportunity to develop a strong product and see what we can do to fill that gap.

Some of this might require venture funding, which is something we'll evaluate as we go. Many who have been in the drone space know how much paperwork and regulatory compliance are involved in developing commercially available products, and that is even harder now under the present administration. There is no guarantee that these regulations will ease up. We have to consider what is best for our customers and our business as things progress.

We will likely roll out a drone development platform in early 2027 that provides a hobbyist kit for building and flying what we are going to call the Kavrous K0 Founders Edition dev kit. We will still need to complete the proper compliance work, so early 2027 is a target, but the release could extend beyond that.

We will also be expanding our FPGA development board lineup with boards that further our design philosophies around accessibility, learning, and innovation. Be sure to look for further blog posts to get an idea of when those will come out.

Final Thoughts

There is still a lot to come for Kavrous, and I hope that you come along for the journey. It'll be hard, and we will have to be scrappy to make things work. Rebuilding trust after the abrupt closure of Oak will be a long road, though I am confident that things will get better.
